Tabby Tuesday Book Review and Contest: Awkward Family Pet Photos

Brian's Home, adopt cats, we deserve it!Brian's Home, adopt cats, we deserve it!I was really excited when my pal Jonathan from Three Rivers Press, at Random House contacted me and asked if I would like to review the new book by Mike Bender and Doug Chernack entitled Awkward Family Pet Photos.

Awkward Family Pet Photos

As you can see below, this book is being released today, and you can win a copy.  But first, here is the promo material that accompanied the book I received for review:

“Awkward Family Photos spent sixteen weeks on the New York Times list. It was featured everywhere from the Today show and Nightline to People and Maxim, and launched a line of greeting cards, calendars, and even a board game. Now, authors Mike Bender and Doug Chernack are back with even more awkward moments in their new book AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS (Three Rivers Press Paperback Original; November 1, 2011), a hilarious tribute to the unbreakable bond between people and their pets.

There are few things more rewarding than having a pet. They love us unconditionally, shower us with attention, and actually help us live longer. So, what can possibly be awkward about our animal BFFs? Well . . . nothing. In truth, we’rethe awkward ones. We adore our pets and treat them like members of the family, but let’s face it—sometimes L-O-V-E makes us go a little overboard. We give them middle names, throw them elaborate birthday parties, and make them a Christmas sweater to match with the rest of the family. Truth is, what they cherish most is our companionship. But maybe that’s why we love them so much—because for such a simple pleasure, they allow us to be as awkward as want.

It’s no secret that the mega-popular website continues to be a hit. The site, which launched in May 2009, gets more than 15 million impressions per month, has 1.5 million unique visitors per month, and receives between 100 and 150 photo submissions every day.  Pet photos quickly became the most popular and the most commented upon photos on the site, so in June 2010 Bender and Chernack created

Along with many never-before-seen photos, essays, and graphics, AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS features outrageous pet photos from the site, including dogs, cats, birds, rats, horses, pigs, goats, and exotic pets such as reptiles, sugar gliders, ferrets, and monkeys. AWKWARD FAMILY PET PHOTOS is sure to shock and delight anyone who has ever shared that uniquely special relationship with a family pet.”

My Review

Okay, I know this will come as a shock to you, but I love, love, love pet photos. What you may not know is that I’m an easily distracted reader.  So I must say that a book with mostly photos is purrfect.

The book is divided into chapters: The Pet Portrait, Dogs, Cats, Birds, Farm Animals, Exotic Pets, Holidays with Pets and Awkward Pets.  While I naturally gravitated to the Cats section, I must say that each chapter is fun.  The Holidays with Pets Chapter is just plain fun and the Awkward Pets Chapter gave us all many giggles, some of which, quite honestly, you must see for your self.  And actually I am still laughing at the Bum Sniffer!

The book is well organized and the photos are lots of fun.  If you love critters of all types you will surely have fun with this book, as I did.  You might want to check out their website at: for some quick smiles and giggles.

Overall, we gave the book 4 paws up for it’s creativity and fun!  We also loved the little stories in each section and there is nothing better that a true love of pets of all species.

Now for some extra fun!  One of my lucky readers can win a copy of this book.  All you have to do is leave me a comment and tell me that you would like to enter.  We will select a winner at random and announce the winner next week.

I think this book would just be alot of fun to have around the house-did you see the video on the web about the dog who got into the garbage and had the lid around his neck-three dogs in the house-the other two greet the owner, the naughty one was just hanging back with this silly lid-and the garbage was everywhere in the house. Have a great day.
