I am so thankful when the big helps the small. Today I’m talking about PetSmart® and PetSmart Charities®, a big corporation that does big things for the small among us. The PetSmart® In-Store Adoption Centers recently celebrated the adoption of their 5,000,000th pet. We at Brian’s Home contributed to that number as Sascha, Gracie, Zoe and I all came from a PetSmart® In-Store Adoption Center operated with the assistance of Kitten Action Team.
Here is the press release I received on Tuesday, read it and smile. I know Dodge and his family are sure smiling!
PetSmart Charities® today announces it has reached a milestone by helping to save 5 million petsfrom their in-store adoption centers with the adoption of Dodge, a 5-year-old Siberian husky. Not only did Dodge find his forever home with the Little family of Lake Worth, Fla., but he is the 5 millionth pet to be saved through PetSmart Charities’ Adoption Centers located inside PetSmart® stores throughout North America since the organization was founded in 1994.
Dodge was turned in to the Save-a-Dog, Save-a-Cat Animal Rescue of Lake Worth, Fla., by his former family that had a young child with medical issues and could no longer care for him. Hoping to find him a perfect match, Dodge was taken to a PetSmart Charities adoption event in Boynton Beach, Fla.
George Little, a retired U.S. Marine and “Husky aficionado,” saw Dodge and immediately fell in love. George, his fiancé, Tracy, and their children, Gregory and Kennedy, welcomed Dodge to their family with open arms.
“Since childhood, I’ve always loved this breed,” George said. “It was something about their color and eyes that just got me. I am so excited to have Dodge as the newest member of our family.”
George and his family have volunteered for animal rescue groups in the past and are very aware of the issue of pet homelessness and of the importance of pet adoption.
This year in North America, about 8 million pets will end up in shelters. Half of these pets – or about 11,000 adoptable pets every day – will be euthanized. Through simple actions like donating, adopting, and sharing your story with others, you can be part of the solution to end pet homelessness.
“We’re grateful for the Little family for helping PetSmart Charities reach an important milestone through their adoption, as well as everyone who chooses to adopt through our in-store adoption centers,” said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities. “While 5 million lives saved is an important victory, there are still millions more pets that need homes.”
The Little family received pet parent perks to mark the adoption, including:
- PetSmart® Total Lifetime Care, which includes free pet training, grooming,
boarding and pet supplies for life - Free Purina® coupons for 10 years for Purina® Pro Plan® brand Pet Food or
Treats OR Purina® Tidy Cats® brand Cat Litter up to $4800 - A 5-year wellness plan from Banfield

Hay, Brain, Mum kind of adopted that Fur Ball, no one claimed or wanted him. Now he’s got too big for his boots, started writing on my blog of all things. If your bored, check it out. He certainly isn’t a cool cat, don’t tell him I said that, I am a bit scared of him 🙂

PetSmart is well deserving of a lot of credit for the love of animals that they always display. They do so much more than sell pet supplies!
We were so pleased to read this Brian – Petsmart have done so well to find 5 million pets new and loving homes (like yours).

We think that’s awesome. We (our mom) get their email updates and had read that. Fabulous! We have a PetSmart here in our city, so they adopt out via our shelter. Our PetSmart also had another local shelter in the other weekend, with kittens for adoption. (This other private rescue is separate, but works with our HS.)
So GREAT work all round!
YEAH!!! Mom had heard about that too. She DVR’s The Chew and Josh Duhamel was on yesterday with 2 adoptable dogs talking about his relationship with Petsmart Charities as well. good news all around….
Great news – thanks for passing it on Brian. I am glad to hear it since PetSmart gets such a chunk of my money for cat food and treats and litter and toys and furniture….
Kirby was a PetSmart adoption!

That is awesome that all those pets have been adopted through the PetSmart program! Especially you and your family, Brian!
wow, 5 million! I had no idea they did that many adoptions! That’s wonderful!
Hey, I don’t know if you noticed, but we nominated Sascha for the illuminated blogger award. I know one of the other sisters already received it, but we think Sascha is beautiful and would like to know a little more about her!
That’s just beautiful. Well done, Petsmart. Well done, indeed!
Yay for Petsmart! They certainly do as much as they can to help homeless cats and dogs. And, you too Brian, as one who has adopted your fair share. You and people like you help to make the world a better place, day by day.
We are proud of the work and dedication that went ito finding loving, safe forever homes for that many pets…White Dog Army woos to PetSmart! We also glad Dodge found the perfect family!
The WDA prays that someday the numbers quoted in the press release will be: there are ZERO homeless or unwanted cats and dogs and all euthanizing for overpopulaton has been ended!

Dear Brian,
Kozmo here. I would like to let everybody know that I am a cat from a PetSmart!
As a tiny kitten, I was rescued from a hoarder. I was a Humane Society kitten and when I was old enough, I was taken to Pet Smart. The Kelowna BC Humane Society has an agreement with them and My Mommy and Daddy saw me there (less than an hour after) and they adopted me! I wnt home with tme the next day, and well, the rest is history!
PetSmart Rocks!
Kisses
Kozmo
