Gracie Update December 4th at 1:30PM EST

All, just a real quick update.  Gracie’s lungs are continuing to clear from the pneumonia so we are really happy about that.  The culture they did from the phlegm she was coughing up showed nothing of note.  The good news from the culture is that they saw dead bacteria, which is good.  The really good news from the culture is that there were no signs of any cancer cells at all, really great news.  So, as the pneumonia continues to clear they are treating whatever upper respiratory problem that is distressing her.  They are starting a different antihistamine along with an appetite stimulant and are going to see if she will tolerate a nebulizer as several of you have suggested.

Keeps those purrs, woofs and prayers coming, we all appreciate them so very, very much.

That’s such good news! Hope she is eating. It’s hard to have an appetite when you are stuffed up. Purring and praying that all your fur family is healthy soon.

Yay Gracie! My vet suggested a makeshift “nebulizer” setup made from the top three inches or so of a plastic bottle like bottled water comes in (the edges lined with tape to prevent scratching), a human albuterol inhaler, and a little bit of tuna or babyfood. You smear the tuna inside the bottle end, puff some inhaler into it, and immediately let the cat put their nose into it to lick up the tuna – while doing that, they breathe in the inhaler. Because the bottle is on the small side, it’s about as big around at its opening as their cheekbones, so they do get the medicine. I have not yet tried it because thankfully our slightly asthmatic kitty hasn’t needed it, but it might work if Gracie is unwilling to tolerate a regular nebulizer setup.

Sending today’s healing purrz to the Frum clan, especially Gracie. I know she’s taking prednisone and that is suppoosed to weaken the immune system and make is susceptible to infection. Maybe that’s what led to Gracie’s pneumonia and is making it hard for her to shake..
