Mancat Monday: The Litter Dilemma Has Us Hunting

mancat monday - Brian's Home, adopt cats, we deserve it!
Confused?  Well, let me explain, you knew I would.  We’re still hunting for a good litter and we’ve not found it yet.  Well, we found one we really liked but we can’t get it delivered without it being damaged.  So, we’re looking for any suggestions you might have.

Let me say right off that we don’t like wheat or corn based litter, or anything else that doesn’t look like litter.  Due to having 2 kitties with asthma we can’t have anything that has added fragrances and we’d love to have something that’s not very dusty.  I know that might be asking for a lot, but I’ll ask anyways.

The other problem is we use around 120 pounds of litter each week.  Once we pick one and go to either PetSmart or Petco they may or may not have enough for us on a weekly basis.  The on-site staff here is pretty useless in assisting with that issue.  So, we try to order online but packages, due to poor packing and rough handling by the major shippers, arrive damaged.

Sure, everyone wants to make it right, and they do, but we’re out of enough litter in the meantime.   So, we’re sort of hunting for a clay based litter, clumping, low dust, fragrance free perhaps in a tub that won’t be damaged during shipment.  Sounds like mission impossible to me.  Got any ideas?

Remember, adopt cats, we deserve it!!!!! More Forever Homes More Often! Purrrrr! Zip! Later!

Well, we aren’t much help because we use either corn-based litter (World’s Best) or a sandy-textured silica-based litter that we get from a supplier in our state (Almost Invisible cat litter). We actually like the sandy silica stuff a lot, and it’s not dusty at all, and not scented – in fact, it’s pretty good at absorbing odors and making them vanish. Although it comes in a plastic bag, the bag is pretty heavy-duty. It’s pricey, though. The guy at the company says it is economical in the long run because it’s lighter weight than clay and you don’t use… Read more »

We have to say we LOVED Yesterday’s News cat litter, and wish we would win more of it. But we are thankful we had won a supply of it when the kittens were little and their litter box was in the house Made from recycled paper, you can feel good that you are taking a small step for the good of your cat, home and the environment. Paper pellets are 3x more absorbent than clay and the soft texture is gentle on even the most sensitive of paws. 99.7% dust free means low dust and low tracking to help keep… Read more »

Well, we have to use the litter that doesn’t cost so much since there are so many of us. We use a lot of it. Sure hope you can find something. If you do let us know. Have a great day.

We use the 50 pound box at Costco. Only one we found that isn’t dusty. Not sure it is scent free though. Never really read the box after it said dust free lol

that is a huge problem… and it is sad that the people at petsmart or petco can not order more for you … that should be possible if they would like to be helpful… butt probably they are not…
I understand that you are sad when the bags come damaged to your house… the mama had only one small damaged bag (for the car) and it was unbelievable what huge mess you can cause with a small 3 lbs bag when it is damaged…

We use local French litter, so we can’t be much use to you. But we are somewhat relieved to hear of the quantities you use. When #1 goes away, she always lives a big supply for the sitters and is always amazed by how little they have used when she gets back.

We hope you can find just the right litter in the right quantities!

Brian, we use Premium Choice Carefree Kitty Unscented All Natural Solid Scoop Cat Litter. I have ordered the 50 lb. bags via Chewy.com, and only one time I had a broken-open bag. However, wrangling such a huge bag is really hard on my old back, so I am considering paying a bit more $ and buying smaller bags. I literally (hahaha…pun…) move the bags around the house using a hand truck! Angel and Chuck scatter to the wind when I do that. This product is available at Pet Supplies Plus, and at our local independent store. I wonder if you… Read more »

We just use the cheap Walmart clay litter, it is about $5 for25 pounds. You would have to go pick it up, but it is a good deal.

Oh my word…that is quite the dilemma and a LOT of litter too. I guess you’ve tried ordering from Chewy?
I use unscented 24/7 Performance Tidy Cat but we only need 20 lbs.

Holy tinkle! You use 120 pounds of clumping litter a week?! 40 pounds lasts me at least a month. If your local store employees are not being helpful about keeping your preferred litter in stock, it might be worth an email to the corporate types. Contacting them via email, or social media often brings prompt attention. It doesn’t have to be “negative”, just that you’re having trouble having something stocked at a local store and you wonder if they can solve the problem. Can you order online and have the litter shipped to the store (Petco or Petsmart)? That way… Read more »

This is a familiar dilemma. Truly.

We use Just the Crystals. It’s a silica based litter and we can only get it from Amazon. It’s kind of like the Fresh Step crystals, but cheaper. You get 4.4 lbs instead of 4 for about the same price. We just love it. Every time mom tests other litter, we don’t want to make the switch. It’s really good for controlling odor. It’s not cheap, but works really well.

That is a dilemma! The litter we get is not the type you like, but we do get it through Chewy and it comes in a cardboard box – and it’s never been damaged (so far anyway, but we’re only getting it for one cat!). Have you tried one that’s in a box like that – I don’t know if any of the clay ones come that way.

We use a Canadian Litter named Catsens, and we know you can find it in North America. We review it on our blog 2 years ago, and we love it. According to their website, it’s made of “100% organic fine granules mixed with a blend of organic oleaginous oils (edible), which offers excellent odor control. CATSENS has a high absorption rate, making it long lasting, hygienic and economical for the consumer”. Purrs

It sounds to me like you need a dump truck load of clean sand and one large kiddie pool. Many you kitties sure go through the litter!

You have my sympathies! We use an Arm & Hammer fragrance free litter, but I’m not completely satisfied with it. I think the clumps should be harder.

We aren’t much help with kitty litter but we do highly recommend the service from Chewy.com. If you contact them about the shipping issue, they might take extra care in packing it better.

Hmmm, obviously I don’t use that much litter but TW gets some of it in the big box store near us—BJs. They used to carry a pawsome litter called Generation Earth but stopped a few years ago.TW saw it on Amazon once but it cost more to ship it than the cost of the litter. TW buys the 42-lb bag of unscented Fresh Step, which actually has a rather flowery scent although it’s just plant-based with no perfume and mixes it with a truly scent-free litter like Frisco form Chewy or Precious Cat. That only time she smells it is… Read more »

Quite the dilemma. The one we use is pretty much dust free, but I do detect a faint fragrance, so that wouldn’t work for your gang. Good luck!

We wont be much help in this department. We use two different brands (real litter) and we both like them.

We use Tidy Cat Lite. It is dust free, but has a scent. We get it in buckets at PetSmart.

We can imagine your litter frustration! We really can’t offer any advice, though–we use sWheat Scoop and have for about 14 years.

do you have Tractor Supply stores in your area? their brand of litter is fragrance free and pretty low on dust for a clumping clay litter. our mom gets this for pip and hollie because she doesn’t want the stuff in their rooms to smell like kitty litter. it is pretty good for the price. we think it comes in 25 lb bags or 14 lb plastic containers. another brand we like is Integrity – the non-multicat formula is pretty low dust, but we only know of it packaged in bags. our mom really likes the lightweight litter now but… Read more »

We like Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat, but that comes in a bag and probably doesn’t suit your purpose.

We like the Tidy Cats Instant Clumping. The Bloo Lid Pail has no scent we can tell. TBT buys 3 pails per monthat Walmart or Petsmart or Target. But we notice it is available from Chewy for front-door delivery, free shipping. TBT says he might at that to our autuship list. Those 35# plastic pails are rugged and sealed well.

Wow! You sure go through a lot of litter. It sounds as though you might need a light weighing litter so that you don’t injure your backs! We use a corn litter and a crystal litter here but it sounds as though they wouldn’t work well in your household! Good luck in finding the purrfect fit 🙂

We are afraid that we can’t be uch help…because we’ve been using only World’s Best Cat Litter for years. It’s disappointing that the packages come damaged. I hope you find the purrfect litter!

Have you tried Blue Buffalo Walnut based yet? I know it doesn’t look like regular litter so it might not be for ya, but thought I’d throw it out there. Been using it 4 years and have been loving it!

I know you guys, being indoor, will use a lot of litter, and it looks as though you have quite a challenge on your hands with the Astham issue eh?

We can’t help from here but wish you luck in finding litter you can actually USE!

We have a different litters. There are two boxes on each of the three levels and there is Wal- Mart clumping in one and Okocat in the other. I love the Okocat since it is wood but clumps better than other litter I’ve used and it absorbs litter box smell so much better. It is more expensive than silica litter but last 3 times longer. I wish all 8 of my cats would use Okocat but I have a two non believers in wood litter.

Like the Island Cats, we also use Dr. Elsey Precious Cat. We order it in 40# bags from Chewy. They recently changed their packaging and we think the bags seem to be a little thicker and stronger. Chewy has by far the best price on it too. The best part about it though is how little dust there is and no fragrance at all. Nice clean clumps too.
