Mancat Monday: Covid Food – Is It Real or a Conspiracy Theory?

mancat monday brian 03152021

Thanks for stopping by on Mancat Monday gang, I am always happy when you’re here for a visit. I hope you had a nice calm weekend, ours was pretty quiet and that’s just the way we like it. Today I want to ask you two questions:

  1. Is Covid Food for real or is it our imagination, or a conspiracy theory?
  2. What kind of wet cat food do you eat?

This is not affiliate related either, and I’m not mentioning any brands. We’ve always eaten food manufactured by the company that starts with the letter P and we almost always ate FF Pate. The ferals eat a wet food by the same P manufacturer except it is just F. Simon used to love a Creamy Broths Pouch. Here lately we’re not really fans, sometimes we eat it and sometimes we turn up or noses and walk away from it.

It’s not an illness, we’ve been there where one of us doesn’t feel well and we aren’t up to eating. This isn’t that. Even the feral aren’t fans of some of it these days. I think it’s Covid related in that they aren’t able to get the same ingredients, thus the food has a different lack of flavor. One batch might be fine (we buy by the case) and the next is a no go. What do you think? Could that be possible or did I just come up with a conspiracy theory?

Second, what kind of wet food do y’all enjoy? We’re trying some Tiki Cat and some Weruva, some we like some we don’t. Have a terrific Monday!!! Remember, adopt cats, we deserve it!!!!! More Forever Homes More Often! Purrrrr! Zip! Later!

that can be da reason…many things changed here too.. and we don’t like that…

Oh dear, yet another conspiracy theory. I thought they’d die down. Since I’m on a special diet for my kidneys I have to stick to prescription crunchies. I also get occasional lower-protein snack treats, but only in limited quantities. Mom recently brought home a package of special dental catnip snacks which I love, but they let me sniff them and then slide them across the floor so I have to chase after them to eat them.

I like the pate from the company with a W. It’s good and one of the meals has chicken and herring in it!

Our kitties don’t get wet food, but we know someone who feeds their cat wet food and they love Tiki and Weruva. Bert has tried both and loved it but he is on a special diet so can’t have it, and Sophie isn’t a big fan of wet food. Hope your food situation improves.

Memories of Eric and Flynn

I don’t think it is because of Covid. I used to feed Eric and Flynn the same make but different flavours. Mostly they would eat it, but sometimes they would turn their noses up and walk away. I think that although each mix is supposed to be identical, sometimes there is a slight difference and cats keen sense of taste and smell knows it.

i think your answer is the food has changed, we have noticed human food has changed, the same brands do not taste the same. Pandemic Chaos reigns right now. if the ferals don’t like it that is really something and makes me wonder what they put in it. this popped a thought in my mind. for a couple of years I worked in a ministry that served our homeless population. people, not cats. some of the people who donated foods felt liek since these people were homeless they would eat anything and they donated horrible tasting stuff. homeless people are… Read more »

Momma Kat and Her Bear Cat

You opened a can of worms, Brian! For most of his life, Bear had that F food – but he won’t eat it now (this pre-dated COVID … I suspect they overhauled the formula). When we were part of the Chewy Influencer program, we got enough food that I didn’t need to buy F – so it’s hard to tell when the change happened. Now, Bear gets FF – because it’s highly recommended for diabetics (though we cheat and don’t get pate) and it’s reasonably priced. With BlogPaws and CWA swag we’ve tried all kinds of fancy wet food and… Read more »

Mon is a FF user here and I like it. I have tried a P wet food and the very one she tried and I actually accepted..they quit making! The pet food places seem to be very low stocked no matter where mom goes. They finally did have some but, the shelves are empty in many places AGAIN! I can’t believe things are that bad! They must be sourcing all the food from China.

I tried so many brands of canned food when Nicki was alive, because he was such a picky eater. I spent a lot of money on trying to find the “right” food for both boys, without feeding homemade raw, I constantly fussed over the ingredients, yet it certainly didn’t stop Nicki from getting hepatitis and pancreatitis at the same time. So I’ve kept Derry on the canned vet food I had started toward the latter part of Nicki’s life, along with a LITTLE bit of Orijen and Merrick dry mixed together, just because (a) I can’t be bothered to keep… Read more »

We are finding the same problem here. We went from (2) cats who literally ate anything to more selective no pates, just gravies. The biggest hit has always been Purina Friskies Indoor Variety pack but lately certain shipments they snubbed their noses at. We have success with Sheba Cuts, Tuna and Turkey. I feel like I’m donating more food than they are eating lately which I don’t mind if someones cat enjoys it.

Still young, June is willing to try most all things, slowly arriving at a few favorites and rarely turning away from anything! Loves Tiki, but we’re only getting the basic “tuna” because her Mom can’t deal with the look/smell of all the others!!! She’ll snarf down anything that is “cheesy, creamy or includes veggies” … so we’re still going with the flow, though in time it will all probably change.

Angel Madi was a huge fan of 4 flavors of FF Pate, cod/sole/shrimp, beef and chicken/ she liked plain beef too and plain chicken was her least favorite of the 4. She…would literally nearly growl with displeasure if decided she might need a change by offering a new flavor

Not sure about cat food ~ but do know that nothing seems to have the same quality that it had historically ~ everything takes longer to get and the quality is just not there ~ The human condition has been impacted by the life change ~ those are my thoughts

Hmm…..I was on Hills prescription metabolic for four years and my vet just switched me to wet metabolic. I hate wet food so Mom is mixing wet with dry to see if I’ll “adjust”. So far the answer is “sorta”. Sammy loved FF and the soft pouches of stews. I loved the stews and bisques and Mom is adding a tiny bit of those to my new soft food (from P) to get me interested. We live in hope (well, Mom does anyway!). Vet says I have to lose some weight……

Since I don’t have any babies anymore I can’t weigh in, but I know some food is not good for our babies. I went to the vet to get food and that worked out well for us. That was when a lot of dog food from China was killing our babies. We were to scared to buy anything from China in the way of dog food.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Scritches all around and my best to the peeps. ♥

We haven’t had any food refusals but it seems possible that formulas may have changed. We use FF for wet food but I have plans to try others.

We eat the P brand also and have had trouble getting what we want especially FF Pate. Dad is going order today so hope things are better

Strange times, for sure. None of our cats have ever been picky, I’m happy to note. Our solo kitty at the time, Jezebel did turn her nose up at what turned out to be a stinky, watery mess. We don’t know what happened, but it all went down the drain after we received reinbursement from the company. Be well!

We have noticed the same things with those foods, it is a good theory. Right now with how hard it is to find their favorites, it is frustrating when the formula has changed and they won’t eat the food you drove all over town to find.

We haven’t noticed any difference in the food here… but I mainly eat Stella and Chewy and some raw frozen food from a smaller manufacturer.

That is strange. I can’t get Sammy’s Royal Canin prescription diet right now and had to go to Hill’s.

Anything is possible these days. We always eat the same kibble and the same brand canned food. Luckily we are all doing well. We hope you all continue to do well.

Our food seems to taste the same – but we can’t always get what we like, so our huMom has taken to buying what we like when it is available, so sometimes we have a lot of F-Pate but no FF pate.. Turns out we like FF cheese the same anyway. We don’t get the fish anyway.

Melissa & Mudpie

If only Mudpie would eat wet food! I think you may definitely be onto something. I do know around here the shelves of that particular brand have been rather empty lately.

There’s been lots of shortages of foods too. The mom thinks it’s all covid related. Covid has affected everything.

Ivan and Izzy from WMD

We didn’t notice any difference but our mom did complain recently that Kraft Mac & Cheese doesn’t taste the same!

Marv, Jo Jo, Kozmo, Cinnamon & Barb

Up here in Canada I had not problems with FF or F until just before Christmas. They will eat the food, but not like they usually do (Kozmo has lost about 5 pounds). I was supplementing with canned tuna, just get them to eat, but now they are turning their noses up at the tuna too! Last trip to the big city I picked up random cans of the pricier foods just to try them out and the cats are ignoring these too. They still go nuts over rotisserie chicken and ham, but people food does not have the right… Read more »

It is an interesting theory. I know they are having a hard time getting their product on the shelf.

We used to pretty much just eat Fancy Feast, but after my urinary issues, we’ve switched to TikiCat (lower phosphorus levels). We’ve also had Merrick and Weruva in the past and liked them.

Your theory holds water. It might explain why I don’t finish the FF Savory Centers anymore. I barely lick it. After not having FF for months, the supermarket finally had it this week. Now you have me worried.

My lot eat dried foot from a company RC, very famous. It is healthy for them. They did, however, change the bag size from 10kg to 8kg and it costs the same price!!!!!

Ducky's Mom

I switched Shadow and Ducky from H’sPet back in late ’18 for similar reasons. Then same company had several recalls of their “prescription” foods due to excess Vitamin D. Remember that? Well, I’ve never gone back to the other and never will. So I understand where all you kitties are coming from. I refuse to buy any P foods, either because the very first ingredient – at least for their dog foods – is usually “animal digest”. That mystery ingredient makes me want to barf just from the visual it puts in my head! And I’m sure not going to… Read more »

Eastside Cats

Since cats would eat mice and birds if in the wild, they can’t have much of a taste issue!
However, the premise that some pandemic-related shortages may be causing some changes to canned food is logical.
We feed everyone Dave’s Pet Food Naturally Healthy Grain-Free Turkey Formula, Natural Balance Ultra Premium Tuna with Shrimp Formula, and Natural Balance Ultra Premium Ocean Fish Formula canned food, and various Fromm kibble, but only a little bit of that.

messymimi

We just found out the prescription food one of our cats needs is not going to be available any more. A lot of it has to be that the ingredients are not available, or some other manufacturing concern or reason. We’ll probably never really know.

Caren

that’s an interesting observation! Roary is still on dry “P” kitten kibble (he eats like a HORSE BTW)…I think the Vet is going to take him off of kitten food soon. Cody used to eat wet Wellness pretty much exclusively and in later years he had Tiki Cat as a topper.

Cathy Kennedy

Brian, Your theory is probably not too far from the truth. I find that Covid has caused a short in lots of things. Here lately nearly every auto ship vitamin supplement order I have set I get a back order notice. I believe foods are that way, too. Even pre-Covid certain times of the year is better than others especially when it comes to coffee blends. We’ll buy a coffee for a long time that we love then a few years down the line it gets changed. After contacting one of the coffee manufactures I learned that particular times of… Read more »

Most of us eat F and are happy with it. Sawyer usually gets FF, but Dad keeps buying lots of different brands, as Sawyer won’t eat anything on some days. Of course, we know it’s not the food, but it’s the medicine that gets put on it…even though both are tuna flavored. We suspect there may be some problems in Sourcing ingredients due to the pandemic. We would not be one bit surprised if your theory was true! Samantha’s tastes always changed over time, and we were constantly having to try something new to get her to eat. We went through so many I can’t remember them all now!
